February 2010 Document of the Month

The GAA Archive holds a number of interesting GAA related documents. Each month staff at the GAA Museum choose one such document which is then displayed here as the 'Document of the Month'.

The document chosen for February 2010 is the 1784 handwritten poem ‘The Hurling Ball’

This poem, consisting of seven stanzas, is handwritten on the back of an account sheet. The poem, dated the 23rd of December 1784 (100 years before the foundation of the GAA), contains the verse
                              “but had I each evening a hurl and ball 
                               a green for to play on and drink there with all
                               a guinea to spend and a girl at my call
                               I would never desire to be richer”
