Document of the Month

The GAA Archive holds a number of interesting GAA related documents. Each month staff at the GAA Museum choose one such document which is displayed here as the 'Document of the Month'.

The 'Document of the Month' chosen for February 2012 is an 1886 letter from Michael Cusack, to John Costello, in which Cusack outlines his teaching career.

In the letter Cusack explains that he left home on 13 November 1864 to become a ‘Pupil Teacher’ in the Enniscorthy Model School; one year later he became a substitute teacher in Carron, Burren, Clare; in the ‘second half’ of 1866 Cusack moved to Dublin to train as a ‘School Master’ then becoming a teacher in Lough Cultra National School where his class ‘was first of second-the highest possibly attainable at the time for a man or boy of my age and experience.’ Cusack concludes the letter by stating ‘In Jan 1876 I went to St Johns College, Kilkenny. Three months later I turned up in Dublin...the subsequent proceedings are well known. This is briefly the story of my life.’
