Context

Biographical History
The GAA, in 1980, set up a Special Committee on Gaelic Games in Primary Schools. This committee was chaired by Donal Mac Artain (An Dún) with Lorcán Ó Ruairc (Oifigeach Forbartha) as Secretary. The Committee’s terms of reference were to: “(1) To ascertain the extent of involvement in each county of Primary Schools in organised GAA competitions in (a) Gaelic Football (b) Hurling and (c) Handball. (2) To collect factual information with regard to the structure in existence for Primary Schools in each county (3) To ascertain the total number of competitions organised (where such exist), numbers participating, age limits etc. (4) To identify the problems and weaknesses in present structures (5) To investigate any other matters pertaining to the organisation or promotion of Gaelic Games in Primary Schools worthy of note (6) To make recommendations to An Coiste Bainisti with the object of improving the promotion and organisation of Gaelic Games in Primary Schools.
