Biographical history
The ‘Report of the Commission on the GAA’, published in December 1971, recommended the establishment of an Activities Committee which ‘would take over all the work involved in implementing the Association’s annual programme of games and cultural activities. It would co-ordinate the inter-county fixture lists…It should be given a great degree of delegated authority by the Management Committee’ (paragraph 1.69)
At the 1972 Special Congress, called to ratify the suggestions of the Commission, the motion proposing the establishment of the Activities Committee was passed. This motion read that:
(a) The Activities Committee shall consist of a Chairman appointed
by the Management Committee; one representative from each Provincial
Council elected from the Provincial Activities Committee; and four members
elected by Central Council from Central Council members.
(b) It shall be responsible, under the Management Committee for implementing the
Association’s programme of games and cultural activities.’
The Central Council, at their 5th of January 1973 meeting, appointed their four representatives to the Activities Committee (An Coiste Gniomhaiochtai) which held its first meeting on the 10th of March 1973, with N. Dromguil appointed as Chairman. At this meeting it was decided that the functions of the Activities Committee would include control of all Central Council fixtures; preparation of a master fixtures plan for each year including Universities, international fixtures, official tours and the Shinty/Hurling International; consideration of referee reports and arbitrating on rules infringement; the appointment of referees for all games and the supervision of all gates directly under the control of Central Council.
