On the eve of the All-Ireland Hurling Final, join Clare hurling legend Jamesie O'Connor on a special tour of Croke Park Stadium.

Jamesie O’Connor played inter-county hurling with the Clare senior team from 1993 until 2004 and was a key player in the Banner County’s historic All-Ireland victories of 1995 and 1997.  Four times an All-Star, Jamesie was named Hurler of the Year in 1997.  He also won an All-Ireland senior club title with St. Joseph’s Doora-Barefield in 1999.

Jamesie’s hurling career was nutured at the famous St. Flannan’s College in Ennis, where he won a Harty Cup medal.  His first two Munster Final appearances with Clare resulted in defeat in 1993 and 1994, before Ger Loughnane took over as manager in 1995 and made sweeping changes. That year, Clare won their first Munster title since 1932 before going on to win their first All-Ireland title since 1914.

In 1996 Clare dramatically lost their Munster and All-Ireland titles in a first-round meeting with Limerick, before returning to hurling’s top table in 1997.  They won the Munster Final, beating Tipperary in a close contest.  However the introduction of the new ‘back-door’ system resulted in the same two counties meeting for the second time that year in the first all-Munster All-Ireland final. The game itself was one of the best of the decade.  At the full-time whistle Clare won by a single point – 0-20 to 2-13 - thanks in no small part to Jamesie’s memorable long range winning effort into the Hill 16 goal struck from under the Hogan Stand.

Following this All-Ireland victory O'Connor won his second All-Star and also the Hurler of the Year award. The county reached another All-Ireland Final in 2002, only to be beaten by Kilkenny. Jamesie retired from inter-county hurling in 2004.  He is now a respected columnist and pundit with The Sunday Independent and Newstalk Radio.
