The 2013 Bord Gáis Energy Legends Tour Series gets underway at Croke Park on Thursday 27th June with Kildare football legend Dermot Earley.

These special tours, first introduced in 2008, provide fans with an unforgettable opportunity to hear memories and anecdotes at first hand from their GAA heroes.

A dynamic midfielder, Earley was just 20 years of age when he played a key role in helping the Lilywhites end a 42-year Leinster senior football championship famine in 1998. He won two Leinster senior championship titles and a GAA All Star award in his first three full seasons with Kildare.

He made his senior championship debut for Kildare against Dublin on 6th July 1997, the day before his 19th birthday.  He came on as a substitute for Johnny McDonald in the first of a memorable trilogy of games against Meath in the 1997 Leinster Championship. It was the beginning of a glorious football career for the Newbridge Sarsfields clubman.

Earley’s first full season with Kildare coincided with the county’s biggest success in a generation.  Under the management of Kerry legend Mick O’Dwyer, the team triumphed in Leinster and went on to defeat Kerry in an All-Ireland semi-final.   Despite scoring a goal in the 1998 All-Ireland Football Final against Galway, Dermot did not get to taste All-Ireland success.  Two years later, he won his second Leinster senior championship medal when Kildare beat Dublin in a replay.

In 2009, Dermot enjoyed what many regard as his best season in a Kildare jersey and was awarded with a well-deserved All Star.

A knee injury picked up in 2010 got progressively worse and, just four minutes into that year’s All-Ireland quarter final against Meath, Dermot suffered a cruciate ligament injury that resulted in him missing the entire 2011 campaign.    Despite plans to compete in the 2013 championship, in May Dermot was forced to call time on his inter-county career due to injury, saying "You’d like to finish on your own terms and go out on the playing field. Your health is your wealth. My body has been through a lot over the last number of years and I think this is just the right decision to give it a rest and let it heal properly.”

Booking is essential as places are limited.
