Bord Gáis Energy Legends Tour with Noel Skehan
The 2013 Bord Gáis Energy Legends Tour Series continues on 1st August with Kilkenny goalkeeping legend Noel Skehan.
The Bennettsbridge clubman enjoyed a senior inter-county career that lasted for two decades, during which time he won nine All-Ireland senior titles (three as a substitute), eight Leinster titles, three National Hurling Leagues and four Railway Cups with Leinster. In 1962, he won an All-Ireland minor title.
Noel’s record of nine All-Ireland medals stood until September 2012, when Henry Shefflin equaled the record as Kilkenny won a 34th senior championship.
The style of many great hurling goalies has a hallmark all of its own and they became celebrated for that singular characteristic. Noel brought the traditional goalkeeper’s hurley to a new dimension, adding an extra heavy chunk of ash. His style of play quickly turned defence into instant attack and he relished the opportunity to move out of his square and accept the responsibility of free-taking in Kilkenny’s half of the field.
Noel has also served as a selector with the Kilkenny senior hurlers under Brian Cody. During his tenure as a selector in the early 2000s, Kilkenny captured back-to-back All-Ireland titles in 2002 and 2003. In those same years, he also guided Leinster to two Railway Cups titles.
