Bord Gáis Energy Legends Tour with Ken McGrath
The 2013 Bord Gáis Energy Legends Tour Series continues on Saturday 20th July with the first hurler to feature in this year’s series, Waterford’s Ken McGrath.
The three-time All Star who won four Munster senor championships with the Déise will join staff of the GAA Museum on a unique behind-the-scenes tour of Croke Park.
Ken was a key figure in the Waterford hurling renaissance over the last decade, scoring seven points from play when the Déise defeated Tipperary to win the Munster Hurling Championship in 2002, the county’s first senior provincial title since 1963.
Having starred as a forward in the early part of his career, he was moved by then-Waterford coach Justin McCarthy to anchor the defence at centre-back, where he played for much of the remainder of his career.
Following his inter-county senior championship debut against Tipperary as a teenager in 1996, Ken McGrath went on to win four Munster championship titles – 2002, 2004 (as captain), 2007 and 2010 - and a National League title in 2007. His three All Star awards came in 2002 (as a half-forward), 2004 (at midfield) and 2007 (at centre-back).
His sole appearance in an All-Ireland senior hurling final was in 2008, when Kilkenny defeated Waterford. With his club Mount Sion he has won six Waterford county championships.
In March 2011, after struggling with a knee injury for a number of seasons, Ken called time on his inter-county hurling career.
