Bloody Sunday 90th Anniversary - Commemorative Lecture
The GAA Museum will mark the 90th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday 1920 with a special commemorative lecture featuring historian Tim Pat Coogan.
On the 21st November 1920 events outside of the GAA brought politics into the heart of the Association when troops opened fire during a challenge football match between Dublin and Tipperary.
The GAA Museum will present an afternoon lecture focusing on the events of November 21st 1920. Tim Pat Coogan will focus on the events of that day, including the activities of Michael Collins' Squad and the events at Croke Park. Dr. William Murphy will explore the relationship of the GAA to the events unleashed by revolutionary nationalism in Ireland 1914-1920.
Tim Pat Coogan is Ireland's best known historical writer. His first book, Ireland since the Rising, published in 1966, was a pioneering work, the first history of the 50 years that followed the 1916 Rising. His biography of Michael Collins, publised in 1990, created a remarkable rekindling of interest in Collins and his times. Coogan's other works include a biography of de Valera, Long Fellow, Tall Shadow; the first major work on the Irish diaspora, Wherever Green is Worn and Ireland in the Twentieth Century.
Coogan's career as an author and journalist (he was editor of The Irish Press from 1968-1987) has taken him around the world interviwing diverse figures and made him a well-known personality on both radio and television.
Dr. William Murphy is a lecturer in Irish Studies at the Mater Dei Institute of Education, DCU. He is co-editor of The Gaelic Athletic Association, 1884-2009 (Irish Academic Press, 2009) and co-founder of Sports History Ireland. He has written extensively on Irish sport and the Irish revolution.
