Liam McHale All-Ireland Legends Tour

  • 22nd September 2012
  • 12.30

Former Mayo star and midfield giant Liam McHale will take part in a very special guided tour of Croke Park Stadium on the eve of this year’s GAA Football All-Ireland Championship Final.

The All-Ireland Legends Tour with Liam McHale takes place on Saturday 22nd September at 12.30pm. This unique guided tour is a must for Mayo supporters in Dublin on the weekend of the All-Ireland final and the county’s attempt to bridge a gap of over sixty years in bringing Sam Maguire to Mayo.

Despite winning six Connacht titles over a nine-year period between 1988 and 1997, the ultimate prize of an All-Ireland title eluded McHale and his Mayo team mates who lined out in three All-Ireland finals in 1989, 1996 and 1997.  In all, Liam made 90 appearances and scored 8-58 for Mayo.

His ability, born from his basketball experience, to create moves and scores for others was his real strength. The Ballina man was outstanding at midfield in Mayo’s campaign of 1996 the nearest they have come to capturing that elusive All-Ireland title.  Liam was awarded an All-Star at midfield in that year. Long before Kerry experimented with big Kieran Donaghy at full-forward, John Maughan and his selectors had McHale — all 6ft 5in of him — wearing the number 14 jersey in the 1997 final. Kerry were the opponents on the day, aiming to bridge an eleven year gap since the county last lifted the Sam Maguire Cup. The final will always be remembered for a breathtaking performance by the brilliant Kerry forward Maurice Fitzgerald who scored 9 points, helping his side win by 0-13 to 1-7.

Liam’s sporting talents were not confined to gaelic football.  A star basketball player, he is widely regarded as the best Irish player during the sports golden era here in the 1980s and early 1990s.

From 2010 – 2012, Liam was a selector with the Clare football team.  His quest for an All-Ireland title remains strong despite his failure to taste ultimate success as a player, reaching three All-Ireland finals.  His life-long ambition, of which he has made no secret, is to win an All-Ireland with the Green and Red.

Booking is essential as places are limited.
